How to get Instagram Feed right

Design it right

Instagram Feed shares the same core spec as Facebook Feed - 4:5 at 1080 x 1350 is the ratio to design at - but the surrounding UI is different, so the creative has to carry more on its own. There is no separate description line and no link preview card the way Facebook shows one, so the primary text and the image do the work. Lead with the hook in the first line of primary text, because Instagram truncates it after about 125 characters just like Feed does.

⚠️

The common mistake

1:1 remains a safe fallback when a file also needs to run in a square placement, but 4:5 wins on mobile for the same reason it does on Facebook: more height, more attention. Avoid uploading a 9:16 Reels master to Feed - it will be cropped to 4:5 and your framing suffers. Carousel cards must be 1:1. Keep any burned-in text away from the very edges so it survives the small amount of chrome Instagram overlays, and remember that a large share of the audience watches video without sound, so caption or subtitle anything that matters.

Check your creative against Instagram Feed

Drop your files into the free creative validator - it reads each file's dimensions in your browser, tells you which placements it covers, and flags the aspect ratio your set is missing. For a single file, the aspect ratio checker gives a per-placement verdict.

Instagram Feed FAQ

What is the best aspect ratio for Instagram Feed ads?
4:5 (1080 x 1350). It takes the most vertical space in the mobile feed. 1:1 is a fully supported square fallback; 1.91:1 landscape is accepted but shrinks the ad and is rarely the right choice.
What size should an Instagram Feed image be?
1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5) as a JPG or PNG under 30 MB, minimum 600 pixels wide. A 1:1 square is 1080 x 1080. Instagram displays no separate description, so the image and primary text carry the message.
Is Instagram Feed the same spec as Facebook Feed?
The ratios and file limits match - 4:5 primary, 1:1 and 1.91:1 accepted - but the layouts differ. Instagram has no link description line, so you rely more on the primary text and creative than on Facebook, where a link card and description appear.
Can I run the same file on Instagram and Facebook Feed?
Yes. A 4:5 master at 1080 x 1350 serves both cleanly, which is why automatic and Advantage+ placements assume it. The gain from a shared 4:5 master is why grouping placement variants into one ad is worth automating.
How long can an Instagram Feed video be?
Up to 60 minutes in Feed, but a direct-response ad should be seconds, not minutes. Use MP4 or MOV up to 4 GB and win the first three seconds; the rest only matters if the opening earns the watch.

Other placement specs

One concept, every ratio, one ad

Once each concept has its 4:5 and 9:16 cuts, uplads reads the placement in every filename and merges them into a single multi-placement ad - the right cut in each surface - across a whole bulk launch.
